Shwaisey
First things first, and I am honored to run with crowd I got run with, the ASL guys, Mickey, Chris, Voltron, Beastmug, Eagle, Vacceo, Harvest (even though the last wore the wrong camo) Ya'll legit. Operation Irene IIV was at MUTC this year, rather than the normal AO (Zussman) and it was a nice change up. They Pyro was not as well done as at Zussman but MUTC brought alot of fireworks. Cars on fire, RPG's shooting flares 50 ft in the air, Speakers playing the soundtrack from Blackhawk down, etc. TFFR and FF both had technicals, the TFFR had a wheel tank with a minigun on a revolving turret that made the Freedom Fighter's day very difficult. The FF had a toyota truck with a guy and a AK roaming around that also put a dent in TFFR movement. Throughout the weekend I got to use most of the field, starting out spotting for Voltron atop a 6 story wreakage building that had blown out walls and floors. The AO has several 40's era buildings that all had roof access that gave snipers an easy way to pin down any sort of mass movement from building to building. Three pros:-AO was absolutely amazing. The fact this is in our backyard and Indiana players aren't recognized very often perturbs me-My squad and platoon were amazing, if there was one thing that keeps me coming back to this thing we call "play army" its the quality of the people that are in this group and I see regularly at events. -Night game was giving me flashbacks from the Zussman AO and from every post apocalyptic fight scene in city movie ever. massive troop movements in/out of doors, clearing basements and the lights turning off on us, taking building 9 from the TFFR Three cons:-Task Force Field Rangers, that Black protec doens't give you extra lives yo. -I proffered Zussman, but MUTC was still very fulfilling.-All the games started late, and also ended on time. Except the Sunday game that started late, and ended 30 minutes early.investing over $200 into this game, my problems with this should be obvious. Overall It was a positive experience and makes me cry deep down inside that I work all weekends and have for several months. I will return next year. Vacceo
I´ll take this post as a placeholder but by now, I can say I took the grenadier role to a whole new level.
fish
I did not have as much fun at Irene IX as I did Irene VIII. Not merely because it's in my back yard, but I prefer Zussman over MUTC greatly. But I'll approach this on how we do our AARs @ ASL, at least 3 pros and 3 cons. Pros:- Technical with .50 and Mortar (later the AK) was nice to have.. there were a few times where I saw him absolutely rape rocket-less Rangers.- Meeting some new folks from outside of the area. My playing as a grenadier failed miserably.. while the M79 and PB4 shells make rockets go far, having 1 shell really sucked.. so it was nice to be able to hand Vacceo a bunch of rockets to let him use.- Not seeing action meant I didn't have to walk back to the damn tent often... see Cons. Cons:- Buildings with glass .. half of the AO was useless as it meant either fighting your way into a door, or shooting off the roof. There was very little inner building fighting, which given the AO, was a huge selling point. Point to Zussman here, every building can be shot out of, from many, many places.- Cheating .. Good Lord it was worse this year than last! You know it's bad when at the end of the 2nd scenario outside of the "Bekarra Market" you have staff having to call Rangers out for them. Never mind MSG Mullens refusing to disembark a disabled vehicle, despite rules stating he must do so.- Tasking .. I barely saw anything outside of the Bekarra Market because it always seemed like either my squad was told to hold there from the beginning, or told to pull back to help hold. Now, this could easily be my fault.. as I know several of our guys made pushes separate from what it was my understanding that we were being asked to do.. and so I didn't often find myself ranging out. So, I went through maybe 10 mags. :/- Confusion on Regen point .. was it the tent? Was it the cemetery? It seemed to change several times. Lessons learned:AEP MP7s apparently don't kill Rangers.I am not meant to be a grenadier. As a medic, I don't really need a gun, the MP7'd be nice, but it doesn't kill Rangers.Helmets make you invincible. No matter how cold the day starts, I should not use any head covering.Facemasks make you impossible to understandI don't like my battlebelt anymore.I have a Tornado and must remember to use it.Irene X will probably be my last Irene unless the experience wildly improves. dragon
I would like to urge everyone to post their AAR's when the thread pops up on the Lion Claws forums. I had a good time with good friends and some really great Freedom Fighters. This year was my best as far as involvement in other squads goes. People were prepared to help out and willing to work hard, last year was nothing of the sort with most people wanting to stand in empty buildings. This for me made it a good time overall, there was always something to do. Pros:The night game once again was badass.. Honestly the time spent in buildings 7 and 8 were the most fun I've had in airsoft since Redemption 2. The fighting was intense, room to room clearing CQB badassery. We held the violence of action the entire time and it didn't matter how many rangers were there, we were just too aggressive. The shear height of the buildings in close proximity make this field nearly impossible to maneuver on without great team work. I agree with Fish that the windows being closed greatly diminished the capabilities of battle on this field, but I still liked MUTC quite a bit. Zussman is still MUCH better. The mortar system used by TFR on Sunday really impressed me. 150yd shots landing with precision is an airsoft feat nearly unmatched when it comes to things of this type. Polar Star DMR range from building 408's rooftop, before it went down. I made dozens of kills up to 2.5 buildings away and seeing rangers totally baffled when they're hit 2-3 times and no one is even remotely close. Great feeling!! Cons: I'm going to go from bad to worst here.Polar Star going down did suck, I was VERY disappointed but the issue is being corrected by P* as we speak and then shipped back to me this week.Technicals.. As cool as they were I'd still rather have the .50cal blank firing technical from Zussman.TFFR... This year's Irene was by far the worst sportsmanship I've ever seen at a large game. From blatant no hit calling (10ft shots out to 100yd shots included), to the complaining, to abusing of rules, to breaking of rules. Calling other players out, yelling at people for whatever BS reason, blind firing and then calling me an asshole for calling the guy out for doing it. I mean seriously, they need removed from their high horse and re-learned how this game is played. This is an honor sport and I saw VERY LITTLE honor from the TFR this weekend. I did meet some VERY cool rangers but they were greatly outnumbered by people who need to find another hobby more to their liking. I'm still up in the air about attending Irene X due to the TFR issues this year. In all honesty, I'd like to get a good bunch of guys to play TFR with hopes of maybe changing the outlook on them a bit, or improving the quality of play for both sides. Being TFR shouldn't be a status symbol, but rather representing those who gave their lives doing honorable things. You don't honor the men who served and the men who died in 1993 by just trying to win, even if you have to cheat or lie, you dishonor them. Dragon out.Platoon 1 Sniper (Part-time) Oh also I'm tagging this on the end here since it initially slipped my mind. Someone in building 58 definitely stole part of our pizza which was in a box marked with our names in the refrigerator. Need I say more?
Burchell
Despite some bad sportsmanship I still had a good time, possibly even better than last year. Had fun fighting w/ 3-4 which seemed to be mostly team Stormblade & a few players from the rest of what was 3-5.Pros:The AO.My squad taking over TFR's FOB. Muscatatuck is now home to my favorite kill.Good sportsmanship on both teams.Winning a gun bag at the raffle. Only a gun bag but it's still my first raffle win. I think 3-4 of my squad members won AEGs.Getting onto the 2nd floor of rumble building at the night game w/ TFR in it & clearing most of the 2nd floor. TFR got us though. The $10,000 donation to Special Operations Warrior Foundation. NeutralNo Mogadishu Mile. I honestly don't care for it. I 'd imagine some people were looking forward to it though.*Being the only FF in a barracks filled w/ TFR. They were nice, I just would rather be w/ fellow FF. Although one did snore really loud. ConsBad sportsmanship, both sides. Squad preparation. I was originally w/ 3-5, however, I was told the day of when we were in formation that my squad was now apart of 3-4. During the month or so of ASL hosting the FF forums I never saw a post from the 3-5 squad leader. We got a new one a week before the event and still no communication. I still have no idea who the squad leader was. The platoon LT & SGT were both great though.Like Shwaisey posted, late starts & early endings.*Not a big deal but I found it kinda ironic that we were supposed to preorder our food to make sure we got it on time & it still didn't help for pizza orders on Saturday. Again, not a big deal at all, stuff happens. TFR locking building 9(?)s doors.Site didn't have the pyro like Zussman but still had a similar cost. *Not really game related. On a side note did anybody else notice this quote about last years Irene? "All,John has posted up his own photos in the "official" OPI 8 photo gallery on the site here. That is only a small fraction of all the photos taken however....we had a couple of staff members taking photos pretty much the whole time. One of them took over 900 photos, the other over 1000." - http://www.oplionclaws.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=37334#p37334A year later and still nothing? Faust
I just had a chance to read through these AAR's. Constructive criticism fuels improvement; I will reference this thread when we start planning next year's Irene. This was IPMO's first Irene as a hosting/staffing team; it was a very good experience.
