LordKelvin
Sup guys. Having not been given a callsign, Lord Kelvin, Kelvin, or even 'LK' works just fine - its an older handle of mine from the days of playing Battlefield 2142. I'm more or less fresh meat when it comes to airsoft, though I've known about its existence for years. I was on the other side of the invisible fence - playing that awful thing they call paintball. While the wooded settings are not new to me, both as a woodsballer and also as an avid hiker and scout, the different ranges, speed of play, and ballistics are totally new, as are the subtle differences in equipment. I've dipped my toe in the pool with Noob Day - I came with Red 2, and was the short dude in desert palm camo + UMP45 replica. Besides the soreness from being out of shape and a small incident of rather blatant cheating, I had a blast there, and hope to attend more. I suppose I came better prepared than most, having done most of my initial research alone and with some reccommendations from Red, so I had a full kit and even a backup pistol (that totally failed, lol!). That being said, I found that the UMP is definitely not suited for the woods - the long stick mag juts out so far I had to ghetto side-fire the thing half the time. Indoor or urban CQC seems more suited to its range and handling, even with the upgraded battery. Tips on a marksman rifle or some other weapon that is more suited for woodland ops that isn't a sniper would be appreciated. That's all I have for now. Hope to see you guys on the field again soon! NebAnon
Hi, welcome to the boards. When it comes to finding a aeg, most of the different gun styles dont play a huge role in accuracy or range (with exceptions of course). But once you strip away the parts that look real, you have your battery, gearbox, motor, hopup, and barrel. Some gearboxes are fairly universal, like the version 2 gearbox in m4s and have a plethora of parts available, whereas other guns have proprietary boxes and require proprietary parts. These are the parts that you can monkey with to get better range and accuracy; notably your barrel and hopup mainly. So if you want a DMR, then you can build one from an m4 or m14, or almost anything really, as long as you can put a long barrel on it and a good hopup. If you raise the FPS above rifle limits, some games will not allow the gun unless its an actual DMR style rifle for real; ie. a hot m14 fixed to semi only would be fine, but a hot FPS Elite waifu p90 sniper cannon would be a no. But if you are just looking for a better functioning gun for outdoors than the UMP you had, then really any rifle sized gun is going to be good. You can usually also get a longer barrel for a gun by adding a mock suppressor if you are so inclined. Keep coming out to games and take a look at what people have and how they did it and get some ideas of what you like and want to do. Welcome to a new habi.... I mean... hobby. AR14
You best not be talking shit about anything with HK on it son. On that note, for long-range-things check out the SL8; Es ist sexy und es ist lang. I can't recall seeing desert palm at Noob Day but if you're going to the MCC game on the 23rd perhaps I will. LordKelvin
Thanks for the welcome everyone. I was the only one in desert camo at noob day so I thought I might have stood out, guess not. Anyway, I appreciate all the suggestions, and I'll take a look at the various rifles you've recommended. A new gun so soon is a bit out of budget but it never hurts to plan ahead. As a side note, I definitely don't dislike the UMP - it has a really nice profile, lightweight for my shrimpy arms, and has a distinct sound that I enjoy. Just not quite the weapon I should have turned to for trying to blend into the leaf litter prone, lol.
Sturm
Weeeelcome! Try a mesh wrap, although to be honest the rest of your gear will give you away equally as much.UMPs are cool little things. I've got a Tec9 (Echo 1 GAT) and I absolutely love the profile of it.RIP firing from prone though. Here's a picture of an older AK with evike's $5-$7 sniper veil velcro'd to the barrel. Newer picture with Rusky style Homemade Viper Hood:Had barrel bag on. Edited April 14, 2017 by Sturm
