Indy Battleground 2/27/16 Aar

So, myself and several others from the forum attended the event at Indy Battleground, and I must say, it was definitely an improvement from a year ago.

Pros:

  • First game was very one-sided, but was stopped quickly and teams were divided evenly
  • Varying game modes on various fields
  • Incredible new structures since the last time I played
  • The refs were more attentive to helping players out and watching to make sure everything went smoothly
  • Tents and plenty of tables were provided for setup
  • Games were almost non-stop, maybe 10 minutes at the most in between games (pro for me, might be a con for others)

Cons:

  • The barrel plugs provided were not washed out/clean at all, I'm still trying to get the paint off my outer barrel
  • Hit calling (this is every event, it's what we get for playing a sport based on the "honor system")
  • Overshooting (this was a major issue, at least for me; this was noticed and addressed by the refs, but it didn't stop the players from doing it)

Side Notes:

  • I talked with the owner, and once again people were complaining about having to pay for barrel covers and a high entrance fee. Come on people, this is a business, not a private field. For a high-quality field such as Indy Battleground, it takes money to build it up and sustain it.
  • Almost half the barrel covers and team tags were not returned. Again, this is why we gotta pay for such things, instead of it being provided free of charge.

Overall, I had a blast. The new city was incredibly fun to play with, especially with my brand new CQB M4, and had a good team to roll with the whole day as well. If they do decide to host another open play, or even a scenario game, I most likely will be attending.

*edit* changed title to show as an AAR

Pros:

  • The refs were more knowledgeable and active than last game, it's not easy watching 6mm bbs. They moved more and did what they could to watch the horde of players.
  • Fast paced - No more then 10-20 minutes between games. Rules were kept simple and open-playish and they tried to keep our butts in gear at the staging area.
  • The Game types were switched up pretty often, each being a fresh twist.
  • So many new buildings...
  • So many delicious tables!
  • Weather was almost perfect!
  • Pretty sure people actually watched their MEDs and used bang kills this time around.

Cons:

  • A bit of spawn camping later in the day, that wasn't fun on the attacking team and I bet it wasn't fun for the defenders either. Should the Refs intervene? I don't know. Opfor should've pushed, lol!

Side Notes:

  • I had gear problems, which means I missed a few matches.
  • Ya'll need to clean up, I returned three game props (Team tags) that were just thrown on the ground. Spent CO2 goes in the trash.
  • Price was fine IMO, it's an excellent field and it's not like we have games at this place once a week or anything. The field is probably expensive to maintain.
  • Smokes are great for covering advances, especially the High Output ones. Use them!
  • Some dude left his worn flathead screwdriver and an M4 GBB magazine without the shell.
  • Adding this after AceReaper refreshed my memory a bit - Towards the later games the refs got a bit more sparse.
  • Would it be worth it to pressure-hose the paint off of buildings?

Man, I love this field. I'll do what I can to attend the next one, assuming they decide to host another.

I'll hopefully have a video up later this week. Just general shenanigans this time around.

Personally didnt notice the refs trying to fix any issues. Only one ref actually was going around getting on player's cases for not following rocket rules or calling hits. Any time i talked to the remainder of the refs about hit calling issues (specifically on one player 3 different times through the day) they just told me there wasnt mch they could do and resumed thwir conversations with eachother. That said, the owner was more helpful on that front than the refs were.

Spawn camping was indeed an issue that last game, but i managed to break out wih 3 others and we got a fair bit forward before getting eliminated. Just gotta run faster than they can track you with their bbs. Managed to bang kill 2 players and knife tap another on my 3rd charge from spawn.

Overall it was an pretty good day. I had fun up until the last couple rounds when hit calling went out the window, but even that it wasnt enough to make me not want to go back.

Pros:

Good pistol action

Some good kills with my recently repurchased L96

Gear worked great

Perfect weather

Smokes were fun to use

Cons:

Hit calling, clearly.

Paint. Everywhere. Cant do much about that though.

Ak started misfeeding at the end of the day

One magazine jammed up ridiculously well. Bb is between the follower and spring.

My biggest complaint was that people didnt pick up there crap, didnt have my smp running, and people blind firing ace knows which guy it was

Other then that i thought it was great got to see ace pick some guys off with that rifle of his and saw new faces and old

I had a decent time I arrived a few hours into the games so I missed the first couple however

pros: Nice to see people out supporting airsoft at this field hopefully we don't have to wait a year to play there again

          Had my v12 rocking

photographer took some nice action shots

Cons: Hit calling like someone mentioned it seems to be a problem everywhere usually

Refs-I do think some were trying to focus on certain things and not others I heard ref arguing with players about full seal goggles a few times which is good that they are looking for that, however as I was walking off the field and some other players were stating there concerns to the refs and the refs response was well sir there is nothing we can do about that and went about his conversation with the other 2 refs that were standing there with him, mind you this was during the last game in the city and the game was still going on at that time now I am not going to name drop so they could of handled it different and definalty should of been spread out during the game.

Barrel Cover- I heard people  complaining about barrel covers and that they were getting charged for them, easy fix I don't know about everyone else but most ops I have been to require such devices so seems that we should already have them, same with kill rags?

Overall it was a good time with the typical pros and cons it seems to arise every time we play here.

A little late to the party but figured I'd post my thoughts as well.

Pros:

  • Weather was fantastic!  Last time I was here it was extremely hot and humid and was one of the few times playing I really had a problem with heat.  This time was about as perfect as it could possibly be.
  • The field is fantastic, as always.
  • No major hit calling issues.  I don't take this as seriously/personally as some, but only once did I have a real issue and they did eventually call themselves out after a few more shots so it is quite possible I was wrong in thinking I hit them at first or they didn't feel it.
  • Great staging area - I was running late and didn't get in the action until after the first game and there was still plenty of space for me to grab a picnic table.
  • Refs tried *very* hard to keep games moving with reasonable, but short breaks.  Felt like I got my $25 worth gameplay wise even though it was only a ~5 hour day.
  • Refs policed barrel plugs to ensure that *everyone* had one on before leaving the field.  I appreciate this effort in stark contrast to a lot of places where they aren't required or enforced well if they are...  Accidents happen and these help make sure no one loses an eye in the staging area, etc.  Ditto on enforcing full-seal eyepro.
  • The two times I had very close (i.e. MED) encounters things went very smoothly.  I watched someone graciously run through and bang kill myself and at least two or three others.  When I was close to someone and pulled out my sidearm I said bang before pulling the trigger and my opponent kindly called the pseudo-hit instead of blasting me.
  • .20g bbs provided at chrono - I *hate* it when fields expect you to chrono with a .20 (perfectly reasonable) but don't provide them to ensure people are being honest.

Cons:

  • Paint...  Stupid pet peeve of any paintball place I suppose but you would think I was rolling around in it as much random leftover paintball residue I found on stuff afterwards.  I'm a baby. what can I say, but this still bugs me  :D
  • Overshooting - I missed the initial safety brief so I don't know if this was touched on at all by the staff and I was not a victim of it myself as explained above but I definitely saw some people get blasted on full auto from fairly close distances.  IMO semi-only when fighting inside the town would  not be an unreasonable rule..  I personally never saw any refs addressing this.
  • I noticed one very active ref and the others didn't seem to do much.  Again, I had no real issues but it seems like the people that did were not having any luck getting it addressed.
  • Minor spawn camping but honestly it was near the end of a game and it wasn't overly abusive, just annoying.

Overall I had a blast and will *always* try to make it down here.  People will whine about the $25 fee all day long but the place is entirely worth it despite the minor issues, most of which are present anywhere.
