Low Budget Beginnings.

I would like to start off by saying that I am new to airsoft. Well, not exactly 100% new. I've owned several (probably 50 plus) cheap $5-$25, Chinese, flea market, spring operated, "airsoft guns". Most of these crappy guns broke a day or two after purchase. I assume that these high dollar machined pieces of art are the standard of the sport. The thing that concerns me is, some of these guns cost the same, if not MORE than the real guns I own. Maybe its the site I'm looking at, Idk.

Anyway, my s/o and I have been looking into airsoft for a little while. We would really like to get into this sport, but money is tight, and our jobs don't pay much. What would be the standard "beginners set" that isn't going to make us look like total noob on the field, or break the bank?

This set should include:

>Primary select fire AEG assault rifle

>Secondary semi auto pistol

>Eyewear

>biodegradable BBs

Also, would it be weird bringing a girl(s) to an airsoft event?

Being relatively new myself, I'll try and do my best.

For the sidearm: I saw this in action at a recent event and I can say it's pretty nice. From what I hear the magazines can leak easily.

For a bit higher budget, Elite Force 1911's are always great.

http://www.amazon.com/Colt-100th-Anniversary-Airsoft-Pistol/dp/B0055RTHWK

I have the last one, which is on the same platform (and has the same creators) as the Elite Force 1911's. Very nice, hard recoil.

For Goggles: I have Revision Locust goggles, which are quite expensive. They also sell a smaller profile version (Which I need to pick up sometime.)

ESS is also very good.

I used these at the event: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006WPSF72?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s03

Very nice, took a long time to fog (12 hour event!)

You'll have to get a recommendation from a more experienced player for Bio BBs (*A wild Civey appears! Civey uses Knowledge, Super Effective!*). I'm still a foliage poisoner, lol

Same with a primary AEG. G&G M4's (Combat Machines) are very nice for beginners/intermediates. Maybe Elite force Bios or Bioshots?

It's uncommon for girls to play airsoft, but there's a few members here who are of said gender. Nobody will have an aneurysm.

Extra - Vests and stuff: I have a real RLCS load bearing rig in ranger green and a $40 condor vest, I'll personally be using the $40 vest over the other one.

It's an "Condor / OE TECH Molle Tactical Vest ( BLK )"

http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?products_id=2765

What's great about these, is when combined with a battle belt (Condor also sells a great battle belt) they are literally unmovable on you. EVERYTHING stays in place, unlike the RLCS load bearing rig that I have, which bounces all over the place. It's cheap, and low profile with very decent durability.

I have a video with my vest up,

if you want, skip to: 3:22, 6:35-7:45. Notice how nothing moves when removing magazines.

Somebody MIGHT have spare goggles/primaries that they would be willing to let you rock for the day; just check. I'll have at least one spare sniper on the field that I might share around at the Mccordsville game.

I always recommend elite force BBs, bio or otherwise. They make a good quality product in a wide range of weights. Their price point is good and they come in a convenient bottle. That's just my preference though.

I seriously have to thank you for the extent you went to help me m'sir. The only thing I have to say is. I'm an AK47/AK74 type guy. M4(AR15) Models are too.... Meh, Aesthetically to me. Although I do like the ARES AM-013, And this:

http://www.evike.com/products/41068/.

This might sound bad, but I really want a high quality Sturmgewehr 44 AEG. But dreams are dreams. I havent even looked to see if they exist yet.

I already have ACUs (I get em reeeeel cheap too), Doc martens 8761 boots, Hardware store kneepads, 6 pokeballs, and 2 masterballs (see what I did there?). Plate carriers seem like a pain in the butt, but I do need a couple. Same thing goes for A battle belt. I need eyewear too. I was thinking a badass punisher mask, but I assume that they fog up real fast, it might also scream "NOOB!" to every other player who sees me.

Does somebody make a decent Glock? I heard about an ISSC M-22 "Glock". Nothing good said.

I'm going to say this now. I might even add it to my sig. I will NEVER borrow or rent any airsoft gun EVER. PERIOD. If the damn thing breaks I would assume that I dont have the money to fix it. If I did, chances are I would have bought one myself...Breaking other peoples things even on accident is a shitty thing to do.

Whats the best weight to start with? 0.2?

If you want it a little quicker, I suggest airsplat. The usually have fairly quick shipping.

They seem expenive though. Like REEAALY expensive. Doesnt help that their site isnt newb friendly. I dont know any of these brands. Maybe I just cant internet.

Seriously guys, thank you for all of your help. :)

The main essentials for Airsoft is a Good rifle, boots, and eyepro. If you want a good AEG, CYMA's are cheap for AK's but are durable ( I started out with one 2 years ago and still have it and works) and for m4's, go with a good Ol' G&G combat machine. They're a tad bit pricey at $150 or so but really worth it. You don't need a secondary really since it sometimes gets int he way to much but that's just me. Eye pro, make sure it's full seal, I have some ESS's that you could buy from the military surplus story, and for boots, just get something that's comfortable and you work well in. The bb's....    Well, you don't always need bio's but they're just recommended. Also, it's fine for females to play airsoft, knowing they're rare to see on fields, they're like all of us. They just want to shoot someone and have fun.

if you like AKs, go CYMA they are some of the BEST AK variant rifles. And if you want to jump into the higher dollar AKs, go E&L.

Airsoft is one of those sports, that, you can put as much, or as little into it, and have as much fun as you want, all cost aside.

There are two things I'm going to suggest you spend money on, the most money on, for your first year or so of playing.  I know not everyone has a larger wallet, and I'm giving you this advice having spent more than enough to have put myself through college, on play army alone.  I have owned every weapon system there is, in airsoft, and skirmished it, in the past ten years.

Spend your money on goggles, and boots.  You can get yourself a CYMA AK, a chicom chest rig, and a used camel bak harness, just spend your big chunk of money on boots and goggles, and build from there.  Those are the two things that will keep you on the field longer than anyone else, and safely so.

I'm not familiar with Glocks, but they are a staple. There are quite a few really good ones. (TM?)

http://www.amazon.com/Condor-WZAVV-P-Tactical-Belt/dp/B0086UC3TW<<< Solid Belt to secure a vest to, otherwise a battle belt for molle. Might need a riggers belt for it depending upon pants.

Vests are generally more compact and less bulky then vests, most people run plate carriers though.

Again, 44$, this is just me, but I really like this vest: http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?products_id=2765

A guy showed up to the recent siege of bastogne event with an AK, HK USP, Russian camo, AK pouch chest rig, Ammo, Camel Bak, and goggles/face mesh and looked like an actual soldier. I had to deal with the logistics of a crate, three cases, massive backpack, vest and helmet. Find what works for you.

The weight all depends on the gun, I've used .25's in most of my guns, some people with high end guns use .28's, my snipers run .28s whereas high end upgraded snipers run .30s and .40s.

Heavier BB's have better accuracy and are less affected by wind. I alternate between .20s and .25's for my Javelin AK and GAT (Javelin is very sketchy, I'd go with CYMA or E&L for AKs.)

The hopup helps, but really it all depends on the day.

.20's is the base, I'd start there.

I don't blame you for not wanting to use somebody else's gear. Stuff happens, quite often on fields. My policy has always been "Hopefully within a few months you can pay me back" lol.

Anything to help a fellow airsofter out. We'd be nothing without eachother.

Boots and Goggles are a pretty big priority though! Eye protection is not something to skimp on. A good pair of boots REALLY goes a long way. I can't imagine playing without my Maelstrom TAC FORCE 8'' Zip boots. I was on a field for around 7 hours non stop, then back at it again for a couple more thanks to my boots and knee pads.

It depends on a lot of factors. Higher weights are more expensive but offer greater accuracy and longer -effective- range (to a point). Heavier BBs don't travel as fast either.

That being said, if you buy a lower-end gun, you're gonna get a cheap hop-up and/or barrel. With this gun, you won't find as much benefit from using higher weighted BBs. I would personally suggest .20g if you're going for the cheapest (make sure to get a good brand), but you'll likely stop finding benefit around the .25g area if not under that.

NEVER, and I mean NEVER fire .12g BBs from anything you paid more than $30 for. They're cheap, sure, but they're terribly innaccurate, no one can feel them when they hit, and are likely made of poor quality materials...meaning they could break in your gun and tear your hop-up bucking or worse. Just don't do it.

After reading Harvest's post, I completely agree with everything he said.

Also, if you don't see yourself using a sidearm, don't buy a sidearm.

I have 5 sidearms, 2 need work, and only 2 I would carry onto the field.

Gonna hit this section by section here.

I'm going to parrot the suggestions for a CYMA AK. Personally I'd suggest one that is a VFC-based AK instead of a TM-based AK just for ease of maintenance later down the road. If you're wanting a good ole metal and wood AK, the CYMA CM036 is a good choice. If you're wanting a more modern AK, I'd go with the CM040 line.

Also an airsoft Sturmgewehr exists but I wouldn't recommend something like that for a first gun.

If those ACUs are the UCP pattern, I'd suggest picking up a set of woodland and a set of 3 color desert camo so you're basic green and tan are covered. Problem with UCP is that it is sometimes hard to tell which team it is on and some field owners just don't allow it. I'd also suggest getting a nice pair of hiking/tactical boots that at least go up past your ankles. Doc Martins are nice and all, but you are going to want something that is more built for the environment you'll be playing in. You don't really need a plate carrier and battle belt to start off with. I'd suggest going with a basic chest rig and then play a few games. Once you have a feel for your playstyle, decide how you want to build your kit then. Also if you do decide to get a mask, just make sure it has ANSI Z87.1+ rated lenses, a lot of places sell the more custom masks with mesh eyes instead of lenses.

I feel ya on this one, I just recently was looking for a glock of my own. Problem with airsoft glocks is that they were all unlicensed and Glock (the company) went on a rampage trying to get every single one of them off the market. You might have some luck importing them in from overseas, but if the store you buy them from doesn't cover the trademarks right then the gun might get seized by customs. Your best bet is to find someone who's looking to sell one second hand that is already in the states. Try and find someone selling either a Tokyo Marui glock or a Stark Arms glock 19, those would be your best bets. That being said, you don't entirely need a pistol starting out with. I bought one, the USP that ProPain mentioned, when I started and barely used it. Hell even my nice Elite Force 1911 doesn't get a crazy amount of action, only whenever I'm clearing buildings and want to go short or if something happens with my primary.

Personally I'd say .25s if you are going to be playing primarily in Indiana, not any indoor places so it's all outdoor field airsoft. The .25s are going to get a bit more range and punch through brush a bit better than .2s. I'd highly suggest Krytac's new line of BBs. I've heard nothing but good things about these and personally just picked up a bottle of .28 that I'm going to test out at Blind Fury in September.

Avoid Airsplat, I've heard countless stories of them getting orders wrong or just outright shipping broken guns. Stick to one of the major retailers like Evike or Airsoft GI (or their east coast store GI Tactical). If you live up near Chicago you could go to MiR Tactical and check out some guns in person or if you want to order from a smaller regional shop, Amped Airsoft is a good choice as well.

edit: So I went and put together a basic loadout that should get you both more or less ready to play when it comes to the actually airsoft equipment. This doesn't include any boots that you may want to get or any camo, but it should give you an idea of how much you're looking at for skirmish ready stuff so you and your SO to get out and play.
